2 Week Rock Climbing Refresher Course

Original Wild kicked off 2018 with an incredible 2 week pure climbing course with Kevin & Jonny. Aimed at refreshing their rock climbing skills and working towards becoming a Rock Climbing Instructor.

Well, we called it a course but it ended up with a couple of mates climbing on the best local rock routes the South West has to offer followed by a few venues slightly further afield.

Here’s the story…

It all started with a trip to Fairy Caves Quarry with some super wet climbing on the Alpine Arete. Even through the rain we managed to get 4 climbs!

We talked about racking up, lead belaying and how we place protection, personal abseils and prussiking past a knot.

As the week progressed we found ourselves staring up at some soggy rock at Goblin Combe. After backing off a slippy route on Owl rock we headed uphill and managed to find Esgaroth, HS 4b in perfect condition. For the grade it packs a punch with some varied climbing and airy situations including the mantle of all mantles at HS 4b!

Moving into the weekend we had more learning points to reflect on including – Alternative top rope & bottom rope options, using a guide plate or Italian hitch directly from the anchors and releasable abseils.

By this point we were all feeling a little worn out, some sore shoulders and some raw hands gave us a good excuse for a day or two off. Or so we thought!

The next day saw Kev and I in Cheddar Gorge where Kevin sailed through every route on the French Pinnacle before sundown. Unfortunately Jonny was busy but by the evening we found ourselves sat opposite each other in a pokey little pub in the Peak District, thumbing through the Roaches guide book. Grit Stone time!

With an evening spent in a barn with a particularly loud velociraptor like snorer we awoke to a crisp & sunny winters day.

Breakfast mission complete we headed to the Roaches Upper Tier  where the guys climbed some famous lines inc Heather Slab S3c, Black Velvet S 4a & Maud’s Garden HVD 3c.

Some more learning objects came to light after the varied Grit Stone climbing. These were: Length of extenders when leading, setting up top ropes with thread and spikes belays, escaping the system when anchors are in reach and assisted hoists when our second is on a top rope.

With 2 days left we decided to head over to the Avon Gorge for some multi-pitch climbing. We ended up climbing as a trio on Nightmare S 4a with a ballsy lead from Jonny around the wet corner on some thin holds on pitch 2. Kev took the last pitch lead where I  snapped a great picture of the final belay high up on the Sea Walls.

With our last day climbing we decided to go to Portishead Quarry. We were joined by Chris Beckett another one of our Adventure Experts who not only took some amazing photographs but also brought some glorious sunshine!

We had the most amazing day, which culminated in Jonny & Kevin both leading HVS 5a routes -Pickpocket & Brink of Solarity. We even managed an E2 5c which i lugged myself up for the first lead for of 2018!

What a great course, with truly great people, some incredible pictures and memories to keep for a lifetime. We already have dates for more climbing in April & May. The guys have reignited their love for climbing and are now looking for the new Rock Climbing Instructor assessment in September time.
